IBERGRID was created under the agreement of Scientific and Technological cooperation signed by Spain and Portugal in 2003, and the collaboration agreements signed in 2005 in terms of Grid Technologies and Communication Networks for R & D. In 2006 a joint Hispanic-Portuguese Commission was set up, whose mission is to coordinate the e-Infrastructures of the two countries.

The so called Plan Ibérico Común, addresses the implementation of a common plan for the interconnection of Research Networks and the coordination of Scientific Applications, Distributed Computing Infrastructures, Supercomputing Infrastructures, and Data Repositories.

The IBERGRID collaboration includes, in addition to these infrastructures, a series of meetings and conferences opened within the framework of the collaboration, which are held annually in an alternative manner in each of the two countries.
